I’m shocked, shocked. People think Iran is working towards a nuclear weapons capability?
Contra the 2007 National Intelligence Estimate, Global Security Newswire reports that new hints are emerging of an Iranian drive towards a nuclear weapons capability and corresponding delivery systems.
What to do, what to do (note: author wrings his hands anxiously)?
"While difficult, Western capitals need to redouble their diplomatic effort to dissuade Iran from taking the nuclear weapons path," said Daryl Kimball, who heads the Arms Control Association in Washington.
This is were I queue the Einstein quote about insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
And while we’re at it, let’s unpack Mr. Kimball’s statement a bit more. Western capitals? So if Iran is getting diplomatic cover from China and Moscow, what’s the effect? And if Iran is getting nuclear weapons and missile technologies from North Korea (or AQ Kahn and friends), China, or Russia, what’s the redoubled effect?
And aren’t we really concerned with results? Redoubling an effort (no, mere doubling is not nearly enough) that has failed to stop Iran’s progress will certainly continue to fail. Options: more sanctions, Stuxnet, and sabotage.
That and more harsh language.
See, I didn’t even mention a led-from-behind Saudi regime change effort or an Israeli nuclear take-down.
