bonds and drakeBarry Bonds and accused National Security Agency leaker Tom Drake share one thing: they effectively beat the system.

Bonds was convicted of a single count of obstruction of justice following an investigation and trial that cost perhaps (no kidding) upwards of $100 million.

Drake plea bargained possible prison time of up to 35 years down to

a misdemeanor of exceeding authorized use of a computer. He will pay no fine, and the maximum probation time he can serve will be capped at one year.

Is the government profligate?  Overreaching?  Inept?  All the above?
