Why is China for the PPWT (and other topics of interest)?

reddawntemp39China, as it relates to the PPWT, their recent defense white paper, and space in general is nicely unpacked at The Space Review by Michael Listner.

What can be gleaned?

To paraphrase John Mitchell, “Watch what China does and not what China says.”

How so?  Well, there’s the standard Chinese boilerplate about them being against an arms race in outer space (whatever that may be; pay no attention to the man behind the curtain) while preserving their own ground-based direct ascent based ASATs, direct ascent ASATs that contain many of the characteristics of missile defense, and space warfare (lasing and jamming).

Why would China say one thing and do another?  It’s really simple: doing so gives them an advantage.
