Where’s the High-Low Mix for Space?

The Air Force has long pursued a so-called high-low mix for its combat aircraft: today’s F-15s and F-16s are the end of one era and the F-22s and F-35s will be the high-low mix of the future.

So why don’t we have a high-low mix for space?

We certainly have a need for exquisite spacecraft, the high part.

We similarly have a need for cheaper, more responsive, good-enough satellites, the low part.

When it comes to reconstituting our space capabilities in short-ish order or in building space deterrence by having a robust and responsive way to get what we need from space, it appears the low part of the high-low mix has effectively been ignored.

Or maybe it just needs to be reframed as a high-low issue?
