A Fantastic Visit To United Launch Alliance Plant

Today the Air War College’s Space Elective students (and a few faculty as well) were able to tour the United Launch Alliance rocket factory in Decatur, Alabama.

What a fantastic facility.  About 35 acres worth of interior plant space is being used to fabricate the upcoming Delta and Atlas launch vehicles, to include the upper stages.

The EELV vehicles are big, bigger, and biggest.  Not quite Titan IV on growth hormone, but pretty close.  The Delta IIs on hand—a couple are still available for the discerning space launch enthusiast—appear petite in contrast to the four and five meter diameter launch vehicles.

Of course, maybe I should have started with the Saturn 5 at the nearby U.S. Space & Rocket Center in nearby Huntsville.
