Why Would Russia Want To Sell Advanced Cruise Missiles To Syria?

A Jerusalem Post report on a possible Russian arms sale of the P-800 Yakhont anti-ship cruise missiles to Syria begs the question: what is Russia thinking?

How about money and power?

First, Russia wants the money.  It’s useful in sustaining its defense industry industrial base.  Foreign military sales are a useful way of effectively subsidizing costs.

Second, Russia wants power.  Maybe they’re not delusional in the quest for empire as they once were, but they still have powerful regional aspirations and with their nuclear weapon inventory, want to remain a strategic player as well…at least someone who can’t be ignored.  So this can be considered networking, so to speak.

Related to the power hypothesis, such a possible deal puts Russia in a position of authority as the “decider” with the U.S.

Seeking a fig-leaf of legitimacy, Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov says, this the sale is about honoring a 2007 contract.

Seeing the world as it is and not as we wish it to be is a useful start:  “US opposition to arms sales to state sponsors of terrorism is well known,” said a State Department official when asked for comment.
