Consolidation Fail?

The Air Force Times (link not available) reports USAF Chief of Staff General Norton Schwartz will not support more joint bases.

The article says Schwartz does not think the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission’s recommendation for consolidating 26 service installations into 12 joint bases is going to provide the $2.3 billion in savings projected.

An Air War College report from February 2010 came to the conclusion that joint basing will actually cost DoD $2.7 billion.

Perhaps wringing out efficiencies and savings is easier said than done.
