From Reuters

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the new START:

“It’s a political issue. I wish it weren’t,” Clinton said. “But I hope that at the end of the day the Senate will say something should just be beyond any kind of election or partisan calculation, and that everybody will pull together and we’ll get that START treaty done.”

Some might offer her statement itself is politicizing the proposed treaty.  Or is it impossible that there are substantive and reasonable questions to be asked and resolved?

Wait, there’s more: the AP reports Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has written that he and the senior  military leadership have concluded Russia will not be able to achieve “militarily significant cheating” under the New START treaty.

So what’s it all about, Alfie?  It means the administration really wants new START ratified.

Back to the Reuters article with Secretary Clinton speaking on the deficit:

“It poses a national security threat in two ways: it undermines our capacity to act in our own interest, and it does constrain us where constraint may be undesirable.”

Fiscal year 2012 is certain to contain much monetary angst for the services.
