DoD’s New Weather Sats

With the demise of the NPOESS program, space-provided military weather is now a need that must be addressed.

It will be with a new program called the Defense Weather Satellite.

The Acquisition Decision Memorandum for the new program was signed last week.  Since the USAF long-ago migrated almost all (much? all?) its weather satellite support (the DMSP site hosted at Offutt with a backup near Fairchild) and knowledge to a joint/combined program office long ago, it will be interesting to see how the command and control of this new system plays out for the Air Force.

In theory, the tail (ground control station, facilities, etc.) could be quite long for the Air Force to get back into this business.
