CIA Gets A Counterproliferation Center

I’m reminded of USAF General Buck Turgidson: “Gee, I wish we had one of those Doomsday machines.”‘

The Air Force has had a counterproliferation center for over ten years.   There’s also a National Counterproliferation Center which functions under the Director of National Intelligence’s authority.  How about DTRA, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, “the U.S. Department of Defense’s official Combat Support Agency for countering weapons of mass destruction”?  And now the CIA is getting a counterproliferation center of their own. I’m sure I’ve missed at least a baker’s dozen more of our nation’s counterproliferation centers.

The CIA center’s job, according to the AP, is to “combat the spread of dangerous weapons and technology.”  Safe weapons and technology thus appear to be…safe.

This only makes sense as the Nuclear Posture Review says the most significant threat we face is that of nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism.  However, I wonder what Bob Gates (or the Washington Post) would think about this effort with reference to the war on bureaucracy, overhead, and duplication.

You can tell what the priorities are by what gets funded.  As “new START” is often described, I expect the CIA’s counterproliferation center will be “modest.”
