Let The DoD Overseas Shrinkage Begin

The DefenseNews article Panel Looks at Closing U.S. Air Force Overseas Installations talks about serious shrinkage to the USAF, but more broadly, to the Department of Defense’s overseas presence.

How serious?  Up to 50,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines.

Examples mentioned were Air Force Special Operations Command shrinkage at Mildenhall and Kadena.  The hypothetical was offered as well: Africom coming to America.

After all, Centcom, Southern Command, and Pacom are all located on U.S. soil.   Hmm.  Why not Eucom while we’re at it?

The theme is our allies have to contribute more towards their own defense.

That theme–reducing security free-ridership–will likely be readdressed over and over again in the next decade or so.
