Most Overrated Space Movie of All Time?

Posted: July 22, 2010 in 2001, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove, Kubrick, Overrated Movies, Paths of Glory, Space In Culture, Stanley Kubrick

While its easy to think of lousy movies, thinking of lousy movies that are overrated, or better yet, lousy space movies that are overrated is a much more interesting and appropriately narrowed topic of discussion.

How about 2001: A Space Odyssey as the nominal leading candidate?

The link above gives a great lay down of all sides of the issue.  IMHO, if you want good Kubrick, start with Paths of Glory and proceed to Dr. Strangelove.  2001 does have some of the most attractive film work of all time (once you clear the monkey-suits in the beginning), but that doesn’t make up for a lack of clarity, story, or interesting characters.

Is it me?

Its you. Looking for clarity in 2001 is a lost cause, but looking for meaning isn’t. And it can mean something different to everyone. Every time I watch this movie I appreciate it more; sometimes on a purely visual level, sometimes because I’ve noticed a new theme to the story.
